My 2 cents worth on XP's prefetch

Ok I have a system with 1 gig of ram and a duron 1.3 GHz cpu XP Pro and I had
a problem with the connection icon not showing up in the notification tray
even with the option to show enabled upon first boot. I looked at the hide
items option after boot and it would show the connection connecting even
though I was already connected kinda like a horse running down a hill of ice,
so I pointed the problem at prefetch and did the disable prefetch tip by
running regedit and going to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
\EnablePrefetcher] and setting the enabled option to 0. After 3 or 4 reboots
to get it to take and clearing the prefetch folder it seemed to still be
running because the folder was still being written to so I searched the
registry for all mentions of PrefetchParameters and set the permissions to
disabled for all users even admins in the reg for that key. So far so good my
connection icon now appears on bootup infact my system seems to be more
reponsive although I still have files being written to the prefetch folder.
I'd appreciate any feed back on this post. Thanks.
