Prefetch not working on XP HE.

John Graham

I am hoping there is an expert on XP reading this who can point me towards
solving this problem.

I discovered that prefetch wasn't working recently, and after much searching
have
found that it was over a year ago since it worked. According to the registry
key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Prefetcher]"
LastDiskLayoutTimeString"="2002/11/19"

Searching around I found the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimiseFunction]
tells me there is an optimise error, and there are missing registry entries.
But knowing where to look is the problem.

I downloaded and tried running BootVis to see if that would give me some
clues or even kick start the thing, but to no avail. When running it to
optimize the system, the program reboots, then shows a screen that says
'Optimizing system for
boot performance' with a tick beside it. The words beneath are greyed out.
It just hangs from then on.

I know that reinstalling Windows is the probable solution but, I am hoping
to avoid this course of action for two reasons:

The program came preloaded on the computer and requires the use of a rescue
disc to reinstall. It wipes
the hard drive before loading the XP files which are compressed and hidden
somewhere on the hard disc I am told.

All the updates from MS, and other stuff would have to be downloaded again.
Hours of work.

Hoping someone can help and point me in the right direction.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Under the General tab, check "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services",
click "apply" and reboot.

It takes approximately three computer reboots to properly rebuild
the prefetch folder contents.

Can you check if by chance the prefetcher is disabled in the registry by
using the following post in Winguides:

Hi Carey and Kumaran,

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately prefetch still refuses to work
after 5 reboots after following these suggestions. I looked at both your web
pages too, but I had already read and acted on these.

I also went into the motherboard BIOS and disabled the boot sector antivirus
in the last few minutes, which I think I first enabled about the date when
prefetch last worked. So far no effect. I'll try some more reboots and let
you know.

Thanks again.

I had the same problem as descibed below. Problem was I
had too many services on disabled or manual. The
prefetching function of Windows XP is nothing but a tasks
that is set to run on certain times. When you have set
the 'Task Scheduler'-service of windows XP to disabled or
manual, it won't be able to run prefetcher, even not when
you use BootVis. Be sure to go to the administration panel
in control panel, click on services and enable the 'Task
Scheduler'-service. Run bootvis again and go to Trace->
Optimize system. I'm almost positive that after bootvis
has rebooted your system, it will run as it should and
prefetcher is back in business.
