I am hoping there is an expert on XP reading this who can point me towards
solving this problem.
I discovered that prefetch wasn't working recently, and after much searching
have
found that it was over a year ago since it worked. According to the registry
key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Prefetcher]"
LastDiskLayoutTimeString"="2002/11/19"
Searching around I found the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimiseFunction]
tells me there is an optimise error, and there are missing registry entries.
But knowing where to look is the problem.
I downloaded and tried running BootVis to see if that would give me some
clues or even kick start the thing, but to no avail. When running it to
optimize the system, the program reboots, then shows a screen that says
'Optimizing system for
boot performance' with a tick beside it. The words beneath are greyed out.
It just hangs from then on.
I know that reinstalling Windows is the probable solution but, I am hoping
to avoid this course of action for two reasons:
The program came preloaded on the computer and requires the use of a rescue
disc to reinstall. It wipes
the hard drive before loading the XP files which are compressed and hidden
somewhere on the hard disc I am told.
All the updates from MS, and other stuff would have to be downloaded again.
Hours of work.
Hoping someone can help and point me in the right direction.
