Boot Defrag Problem

W

webzila

I am running Win XP Pro SP2 / 512 MB RAM / 80 GB HD (80% Free) and I am
having problems with the Boot Defrag. When I look in the registry at
the following key -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction - the
OptimizeComplete says No and the error is Insufficient Free Space...

I tried all the suggestions on the web and newsgroups and still cant
get it to work.
Here is what I tried...
I ran Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
I tried emptying out the Prefetch folder
Made sure that layout.ini is not read only
Tried setting the end and start locations in the reg to 0 and running
defrag c: -boot followed by defrag c: -v
I even tried running Bootvis

Same problem...If I remove the layout.ini file and run boot defrag then
the error changes to Insufficient Resources instead of Insufficient
Free Space.

How do I fix this?

Thanks

Defrag, as included with the operating system, does NOT support boot time
defrag. Soooo, what program are you using that you are having problems with?

I am just using the defrag.exe that comes with XP located in
Windows/System32
If it does not defrag the boot files what is this reg key referring to
then?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
Why does it have strings referring to boot defrag, why does the command
defrag [drive]: -boot work instead of giving an error on this and other
computers? Although on other computers after running defrag c: -boot
the "OptimizeComplete" string in the reg says No and the error string
is empty..

I suggest you stop playing in the registry "sandbox" until you have a bit
more experience.

The key you are referring to defrags the files "used" during bootup, in the
background - when the machine is idle or otherwise not doing anything. It is
used in conjunction with the prefetch folder.

It is ***NOT*** a boot time defrag!

First of all, what do you know about my experience and who are you to
tell me to stop playing in the registry...who is playing anyways?
Nobody knows "everything" about the registry or the OS ... that doesnt
mean that you cant explore it and ask questions..

Forget about the defrag and boot time and everything else...
All I want to know is why OptimizeComplete is No and why there is
Insufficient Free Space when everything has been checked and looks
fine. If you dont know then dont reply and try to get more experience
instead ............

The defrag program that comes with XP needs a "minimum" of 15% free space to
operate. If you have less you will run into problems. If you have huge files
(many hundreds of meg each, or maybe 2-3 gig videos) you may need 25% free
space to move them around. You need free space that equals the largest file
you would expect the defrag program to relocate.
