i recently did a restore and the xp defrager wont start. I cant analyse nor
defrag. I have tried the several tips that i found on this site as follows,
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
the %windir%\inf dfrg inf and install
and the services.msg and start up to automatic and reboot.

i checked to try and defrag in run but same story.
Anyone care to advise?
thanks

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services | Reboot

<quote>
Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine

thanks for the tip did it and it didnt help, any ways i found out what the
trouble was. MFT was to small and the virtual memory was limited. I went to
config and system folder changed the virtual memory to let the computer
system manage the virtuam memory and the problem was solved.

MFT was to small

Did you mean Pagefile was too small?

Anyway, glad you got it fixed.

Note if having disabled or set a low custom size for the pagefile, then
defrag might not work. If using WinXP set the virtual memory to "System
Managed Size".
