,My computer is taking around five minutes to boot. As soon as I can, I have
to go into task manager and stop a bunch of exe files. I have traced them to
windows prefetch folders but they are opening with my cam software
program??????. I have tried every other remedy such as defraging, cleaning
out cookies, temp files, prefetch files, deleting larger files I dont need,
diagnostic start up etc. Nothing is working.

But if the programs are being started automatically, I think you better
take a look at these locations in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Everything you see there are programs that are started automatically when
you log on.

Programs that are started automatically wind up in Prefetch because they
are consistently being started at logon, not the other way around.
You need to make sure first that they aren't being started anymore, or
removing them from prefetch will have an adverse effect.

you can safely delete the contents of the PREFETCh folder. just the contents, not the folder.
defrag the system.
then reboot 3 times.

there is a registry patch to prevent the use of the prefetch folder.

it causes more problems than it helps.
unless you have NASA calibrated eye balls, you can hardly notice the 1/10 second faster program loading it is supposed to help with.

Nnan. Search Google for a VBS script utility called. 'Prefetch Clean
and Control v.1.2.0. It might clear up your problem. Regards. Dingo

but why are the prefetch files opening with my web-cam program and how do I
change this??

Are they listed here:

Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup
Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If so, delete them.

Added info:

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

Maybe your webcam program registered itself as default handler for .pf
files?

You can check in windows explorer -> tools -> folder options -> file types.
