Practice of AD restore

I want to try AD restore of our Environment since I never done it and want
to be ready in case there is a disaster.

What is the best way of doing a practice restore?
I mean of course I will do it in the Lab in which network is separated from
the production.

Can I just use a normal server memeber of workgroup in the lab and then
restore ? Any idea or other tips for my setup test
