PPTP question

I am setting up VPN using a VPN router. The office PC to be VPN into is XPP,
and the remote notebook is XPP.

I'm a bit confused because there are 2 protocols used by Windows, PPTP and
L2TP.

Which one do I use? Which one is most normally used? What's the difference
between the 2.

What is dynamic VPN? Does this mean always on?
