PPT2007 "By letter, % delay between letters" jerky & extremely del

I upgraded from PowerPoint 2003 to PowerPoint 2007 (within the Microsoft
Office Suite – Professional). Now I am observing a problem I did not
experience in PowerPoint 2003. After a search through the Community of
Microsoft Users and other internet searches, I discovered that the problem
has been experienced by many others using PowerPoint 2007.
The performance problem occurs when I animate the text within a text box.
After double clicking the text box under “Custom Animationâ€, I click the
“Effect†tab. Then, I select the “By Letter, 10% delay between lettersâ€
option under “Enhancementsâ€. When I click “Slide Showâ€, the letters begin to
appear on the screen in an extremely delayed and jerky manner. This
continues for several seconds until the line finally proceeds to display in a
normal manner. The problem occurs no matter what % delay I select, and also
whether I am using a 2007 with a 2003 presentation or a presentation created
entirely using 2007.
I have many PowerPoint presentations previously prepared using PowerPoint
2003. The “By Letter, 10% delay between letters†feature is one that I
employ many times throughout those presentations, some of which are 1000+
slides. If I have to change this dysfunctional 2007 feature to another
feature in all my previously prepared presentations it would take days.
I tried all suggested remedies, but none resolved the problem. Loading
Service Pack 1 & 2 for MS Office 2007 did not resolve the problem. I even
deleted all excess “Temp†files. Most suggestions were targeted at my
hardware (not the PowerPoint application itself). It seems to me that the
problem is with the PowerPoint 2007 application. Is there a fix for this
glitch? Do you know of any plans by Microsoft to resolve it?

Hi

Yep, by letter animation is particularly jerky in 2007. Some people have had
a bit of joy with playing with graphic hardware acceleration (unfortunately
some newer graphics cards won't let you alter this):
How to set graphics hardware acceleration back

The only thing I can suggest is using 2003 for your by letter animation
presentations. :-(. And avoid by letter animations in future presentations.
Sorry. Someone else may have a better suggestion for you.

Lucy,

Thanks. I was afraid that I might have to go back to PPT 2003. MS sure let
me down on this one. I already tried the hardware acceleration bit, but did
not get the desired result.

I don't think there is a good solution but this may help a little:

1. Hardware doesn't seem to be the answer I have tested presentations on
both really slow and very very fast systems and BOTH give the problem.

2. If you can have the first line of text not animated and the second line
with say a 2 sec delay it sometimes seems to let te animation "catch up" OR
just delay the first line by a couple of seconds. Doesn't always help but
does sometimes.

3. If you decide to change the animations in bulk it might be possible to
have a code solution which would "upgrade (downgrade maybe) all the
animations at once
