I can't seem to download powerpoint doc files, how do I remedy this with win xp?

Win XP is the operating system, which is not normally used for downloading
files. Where, and what type of document are you trying to download?

Three options,

1) Download the free viewer program. See:

2) Order a trial CD of PowerPoint. See:
**Office Professional Edition 2003 Trial Software
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/trial.mspx

3) Purchase the full version from a local software store
