PowerPt hangs when started directly but not when started via PP fi

Hi,
When I try to start PowerPoint directly via START / ALL PROGRAMS it just
hangs. (This was not always so, the problem just started recently.) However,
when I start PP by double-clicking on an existing PP file, it starts with no
problem. (I have Windows XP Prof., PP 2000 & Kaspersky Internet Suite
7.0.1.325.) Can anyone pls. help?!
