Powerpointviewer 2007

F

Fred Grosskurth

I'm running windowsXP SP2. I have powerpointviewer 2003 which opens the PPS
files just fine, but for some reason it no longer plays the sound associated
with the files. I have removed ppv 2003 and installed ppv2007. It installs
okay, but when I go to open ppv2007 it says it only supports windows 2000,
XP, Vista. I have removed ppv2003 and rebooted, stopped my McAfee and still
it won't run. I have an e-machine, but they won't help since the software
was not installed before purchase.

I did install OpenOfficeOrg and the PPS files open and the sound plays.
However, I would prefer to use PPT.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Robear posted a link to your other threads in various groups on this same
subject. I saw you mentioned "thesimplelife.pps" on a number of them. I
googled and downloaded it.
http://files.filefront.com/Thesimplelifepps/;6361480;/fileinfo.html

It's about 2.5MB, but it has a WAV embedded in the first slide transition.
My guess is that the author took an MP3 and gave it RIFF WAV headers using a
utility such as CDex. This allows the MP3 to be inserted into the slide
transition (which really allows only WAVs to be inserted), but these sounds
do not play on all systems.

It does not play in PowerPoint 2007 on my Vista box, although it does play
in the PowerPoint 2007 Viewer on my Vista box. Go figure. Might be a bug
with PPT 2007, although you're apparently having issues with both the 2003
Viewer and the 2007 Viewer. And OpenOffice will play them. Hmmm. Sound plays
on my WinXP box with both PowerPoint 2003 and with the 2003 Viewer.

(Here's more information about that MP3-to-RIFF-WAV technique:
http://www.pptalchemy.co.uk/embed_mp3.html It mentions these RIFF-WAV
headered-files won't play on Macs, but I think we've seen reports here and
there of them not working on some PCs also.)

Oh, this is odd...if I open PowerPoint 2007 and navigate to the PPS and open
it, the sound plays. If I double-click the file to open it, I get no sound.

So try that -- open the Viewer, whichever one you have installed and working
right now, and then navigate to the file. Does the sound play?

Just to add to the confusion

Here it plays on all our systems
XP SP3 PPT 2003
XP SP3 PPT 2007
Vista Ultimate PPT 2003
and both viewers 2003 and 2007

It is a Riff headered Wav though derived from an MPEG 2 file which might be
the problem

John:

Thanks for your response.

I went to the link you provided, however, I don't have the full version of
PowerPoint, just the FREE download Viewer.

If I remember correctly, it all started after a Microsoft update was
installed, but I have no idea which one.

OpenOffice.org works fine. PowerPointViewer 2003 won't play sound (files
open fine). PowerPointViewer 2007 won't run. It installs okay but when I
go to open it, its say it only runs on XP,2000,Vista, and I'm running XP SP2
Home edition.

I'm lost at this point.

Thanks again for getting back.
