Powerpoint freezing when making slides on pressing enter button

I'm having a problem with Microsoft Powerpoint 2003 (Student and Teacher
version). When I'm making slides the programme suddenly freezes, particularly
when I press the enter button a few times. It sometimes also freezes when I
try to load slides. This is really frustrating as you can well imagine.
Anyone any suggestions I could try? Thanks.

Click on Help, Detect and Repair and Help, Check for Updates

In addition to what Glenna said, update yhour video card driver and version
of DirectX.
