Powerpoint Charts distorted

I've recently run into a strange problem: when I create a PowerPoint chart it
becomes distorted after finishing -- it is as if the height / width ratio is
no longer 100% / 100% (even though checking Format Ovject / Size / Scale
confirms that is OK).

The problem appears with all fonts, as far as I can tell.

Any idea about how to fix that?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for answering, unfortunately it didn't work.

I also tried re-instaling the entire Office package but the problem persists.

Any other ideas?

Yeah, I wouldn't have expected reinstalling to fix this.

What display settings (screen resolution) does your monitor use?
(Right-click your desktop, choose Properties, and then check the settings
tab.) It seems that wide-screen displays have detrimental effects on chart
fonts.

You mentioned it seems to happen with all fonts as far as you can tell. What
font size are you using?

Did you try opening the chart and adjusting it while it's opened as
described in #2 and #3 at http://www.echosvoice.com/charts.htm ?

There's a "reset" button on the Size tab if you go to Format/Object (or
right-click the chart on the slide and select Format Object). Does hitting
it do anything?

The screen is indeed wide-screen, 1280 x 800. Are you suggesting this is a
'known problem' with wide-screen display? If so I hope there is a fix... But
the weird thing is that I haven't had until recently, and Excel charts are
just fine.

Otherwise I did exactly as explained on the website, and resetting didn't do
anything either.

Your're right, I just tried another resolution (1024 x 768) and with that
resolution the charts are not distorted.

So at least that narrows the problem down, question now remains -- is there
a solution (going with the smaller resolution is dissatisfactory as a good
part of the screen then isn't used)

Well, I don't have a wide screen here, so it's hard for me to say for sure.
But we discussed this recently at http://tinyurl.com/885nw Steve, have you
ever noticed anything like this on your widescreens? It didn't seem that you
were seeing the issue back in May, anyway.

It looks as if I'm going to have to add something about wide screen to my
typical suggestion to turn off autoscaling.

Actually, I think this monitor will mimic a wide screen, so maybe I'll see
what I can figure out here.

What is described in the thread seems very similar to what I experience now.
But that workaround (the 4:3 option) is a true pain...

The weird thing is that I didn't have this problem earlier -- to be sure I
went back and looked at some presentations I did a few months ago, and here
the charts look OK -- but then when I open/close them they mess up. Very
strange...

Anyway, thank you for taking an interest and let me know what you come up with

Anyway, I was lucky: a download of the most recent display driver solved the

Thanks again for helping

Hey, that's great news. Thanks for posting it, Henrik.

I'm mucking about with wide screen settings on my monitor now, and, while I
can force my desktop and display into wide screen (1280x720), I can't make
the PPT go to wide screen in show view. It still shows as 4x3 with black
bars down the sides, which is what a wide screen would look like when forced
into 4x3 display. (But, of course, I *also* have black bands on the top and
bottom -- remnants of the letterboxing I get from forcing a widescreen
display on a regular square monitor.)

All in all, it's been a bust here, heh.

Nor more recently when this came up again (like w/in the last week or so).
But perhaps it takes a more extreme aspect ratio to trigger the behavior?
