PowerPoint 2002 hangs

Marc G

When opening some presentations PP 2002 hangs if you try
to do any changes. The only common thing about those
presentations is that they are large (22 MB). Have
installed Office SP2 to no avail. As a workaround, I have
installed PP 2000 on the same computer and it works well.

Any hints on what the problem is?

Hi Marc,

By chance, are the modifications being made on a system where the system
keyboard setting is set to some variant of the French language or where the
default language in PowerPoint set to some variant of the French language?

If so, you are running into a knowin problem with the Office proofing tools
for the French language.

The short term workaround is to turn off the option to "Check spelling
while typing" in the Tools -> Options dialog.

The longer term solution is to install the Office 2002 Service Pack 2 which
contains updates to the French proofing tools which resolves some of the
known problems.

If you continue to have problems when background spell checking is turned
on you can keep it turned off until the next service pack is available or
you can contact Microsoft Product Support Services about various French
proofing tools hotfixes that have been released since Service Pack 2 to see
which one(s) might be appropriate for you to try.
