Using images in PowerPoint

Hi
I am a newbie and have some questions about using images in PowerPoint
2002.

1. Is it best to add images into PowerPoint slides using Copy/Paste or
insert picture from File?

2. I am using some very large image files created when I scanned images
at 600 ppi. Obviously this is overkill for PowerPoint and I should
reduce the image sizes and resolution. Correct? What is the proper
resolution and image size to use for images inserted into a PP slideshow
that will be used for projection?

3. When I did use the above images (copy/paste) for preparing a PP
presentation I ended with a PP file of 414 MB !! Obviously far too
large. What can I do to avoid this huge a file and still get good
quality on projection?

Thank you.

Use Insert | Picture | From File. Copy/paste or drag-n-drop can create OLE
objects, which increase your file size.

Most projectors show at 1024 x 768, so that's the largest size you need your
image to be if it fills the slide. If it's half the slide, then about 500 x
350 is good, and for about 1/4 of the slide, about 250 x 200 is fine. You
get the idea.

Your large file size could be a combination of copy/paste and Fast Saves.

Thank you Lucy. I will look at that link.

Is that better than just insert/file?

I've run into a problem with insert file in that it would ask me if it
was a a jpeg metafile and then not recognize the file!

Thanks. One question: how do you get the toolbar that shows the
"Properties" button so I can check?

Lucy, you are wonderful! Just using your technique I reduced the file
size of the presentation from 414 MB to 2.9 MB !

I wonder if it is worth my also changing the image resolution to 1000
pixels in width. When I tried that with PaintShopPro it seemed to
noticeably degrade the image quality.

Hi Jeff

Really glad it worked for you :)

If you are doing the paste special thing then don't worry about adjusting
the images before you get them into powerpoint - that's the main reason I
like it actually, it saves me mucking about with the pictures in other
programmes that I really don't understand ;-)

Oh, and to get the properties button: tools -> customise -> commands ->
select the 'file' category and it's near the end of the list of commands on
the right.
