We have PP 2000 (ugh) in my office. I'm trying to slow down one line of text
as the slide exits.

Is this possible?

PPT 2000 doesn't give you any animation timings. Slide transitions do have
slow/medium/fast, though.

However, I'm not sure I understand what it is you're trying to do. Do you
need the slide to sit for a few seconds (so the text can be read) before it
transitions to the next?

Correct. Let's say the slide has 3 lines of text and I have them entering
independently (animation on each). When the 3rd line appears, the next slide
is immediately shown. I'd like that last line to sit for a few seconds.

Hi,

It might be your slide transition timings, or set your show to run manually
on mouse click (Slideshow| Set up Show).

Add an autoshape to the slide. Animate it automatically X-number of seconds
after the last line of text. Now drag it off the edge of the slide where it
won't show during the presentation. The slide won't advance until that shape
has animated, even if nobody sees it happening.
