Power Toys for Windows XP?

D

David E. Ross

I just got a new PC, which meant upgrading from Windows 98SE to Windows
XP. I was glad to see an XP version of TweakUI, but I really miss some
of the other Power Toys features.

Is there any way to get the following?

* Desk Menu -- Click the Desk Menu icon on the Tray and get a menu
listing all objects on the desktop. Click a menu item and it opens on
top of what was already open. All this works without having to minimize
anything.

* Send To Extensions -- These add to the Send To context menu option.
Not all the features, but the following: Any Folder (which gives a
folder-selection window), Clipboard As Contents (without seeming to open
a file, copy the file's contents to the clipboard), and Clipboard As
Name (put on the clipboard the complete path to the selected object).

* Target Context Menu -- This is a context menu item that applies to
shortcuts. It has a submenu with such actions as Open Container (open
the folder containing the target of the shortcut) and Properties
(display the properties of the target, not of the shortcut).

I used all of these frequently and feel somewhat lost without them.

NOTE: Because I was not sure which would be the proper newsgroup for
this question, I cross-posted. However, I set Followup-To for only
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

These are the only XP power toys that I'm aware of:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

As far as some of these others:
* Desk Menu -- Click the Desk Menu icon on the Tray and get a menu
listing all objects on the desktop. Click a menu item and it opens on top
of what was already open. All this works without having to minimize
anything.

You can add a desktop tool bar to the task bar by right clicking on the task
bar and choosing Toolbars\Desktop. After doing so, clicking on this tool bar
brings up a menu with all desktop items. Choosing one will open that item
with focus.

You may also want to try downloading the win95 powertoys at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95PwrToysSet/Default.asp

Try the individual powertoys that you need one at a time. They may well work
in XP.

I use the "target" from the win 95 power toys and it works just fine
with XP SP2

I can't understand why this is not a normal part of windows OS!!! I
couldn't live without it!

The 98 sendto works just fine on XP.

Have a look at this.

Windows PowerToys FAQ
for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 & XP
http://aumha.org/a/powertoy.htm

It discusses some of the old powertoys that will still work with XP.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

FWIW, I am using the Win 95 SendTo power toy under both NT and XP, and
it seems to work ok as far as I can tell. I mainly use the Clipboard
as Name option.

Yes. Someone else suggested using the Windows 95 Power Toys for Send
To. I tried it, and it works quite well with Windows XP. The same is
true with the Explore From Here (which I forgot on my orginal post to
this thread although I used it all the time) but not for Target Context
Menu.

New to XP? This is one site you really need to bookmark.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm
Go to her tweaks and fixes page, she addresses some of the things you are
asking about. Doug Knox also has a great site on XP as do several other of
the MVP's that regularly view these groups. Just kinda make yourself at home
read the posts and you can find all kinds of sites to help speed up your
learning curve.

AFAIR the PowerToys are not different from previous (NT/2000) versions.

The only difference I noticed was command.com vs. cmd.exe in "Command
Prompt Here", between a Win98 and the NT version.
