Power problems

Hi, can some one please help? I have a Dell 5150 inspiron notebook & it has
stopped recognising the power cable, so is constantly running off the
battery. (The green light is on in the box on the power cable, so it is
receiving power from the mains supply). I don't know if I just need a new
power cable or if I need to take it somewhere to be repaired? I'd really
appreciate any advice!

It's possible that you got some broken conductors somewhere in your
laptop, but, and I hope I'm not getting to technical here;

You could use a electronic meter to test if there is voltage coming
from the end of your laptop's plug. Think you could handle that?

Check to see if the end of the plug is rusted or anything like that.

Could the wire from the box to your laptop be broken somewhere?

Btw, you say your battery keeps running down, does this suggests that
you have an alternate way of charging your battery??
