power problem

Jim

My computer, HP Pavilion with Windows XP, has begun
turning itself off periodically. The power options are
set as follows:
Turn off monitor: After 1 hour
Turn off hard disks: After 4 hours
System standby: After 15 minutes
System hibernates: After 3 hours

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Jim,

To each his/her own but, I have all those options set to "Never".

LOL, JAX

I'm with JAX here - I always disable all those power options on my
desktops. I think you need to look in other areas for the reaon for
your box turning off. Usually, random failures like that indicate
hardware problems (unless you know the problems started right after you
installed some new software). It's not possible to give you an exact
answer without knowing more about your system, if anything changed,
etc., so here are generic hardware troubleshooting steps to take:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) test the motherboard. If you can't do this testing
yourself, take the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a
CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

If you need more help, then please post back with more information about
your system, if you changed anything, what you've already done to
troubleshoot, etc. For instance, if you just added an external hard
drive, perhaps your power supply is inadequate. Hope this helped.

Happy Holidays,

Hi:

Before looking other areas, first turned options for System standby and
System hibernates to Never as they suggested.

If things become well, your system off is caused by the options which they
will put your system to sleep (standby) or off (hibernates) at each interval
selected.

If things do not change, check other areas then.

Good luck
