Power Options greyed out

I have a customer whose laptop (Sony VAIO) had a battery problem. It
wouldn't charge up beyond 29%. I replaced the battery and now there are
no power options in the Control Panel > Power Options panel. The lower
frame (the one for Plugged in/on batteries) is greyed out and the title
for the frame is "unknown". Before I changed the battery, the customer
had played with several of the drop-downs and changes some setting so
they used to be there, but not now.

I've looked in the Registry but can't find any reference to power
options (probably because I am not sure of the proper place) for laptops.

Does anyone know how to bring these back?

A thorough search of the Registry provided an area (in hardware) where
several power schemes (numbered from -1 through 14) were listed along
with their textual explanations. I tried every one of them in the key
that seemed to hold the current number but the problem still remains - a
totally greyed out panel. The drop-down is blank also.

Does anyone know of an applet or wizard that can be run that will help
rebuild the power schemes?

All indications to the contrary, I'm speechless that nobody has any
ideas on this problem.
