Power On problems

Hi everyone

I build new PC:
RAM: 2Gb PC6400 Corsair
CPU: 2 Core Quad 2.4GHz
CPU Fan: Asus
MB: Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI
Power: 600W SLI ready
HDD: SATA 160Gb, 16Mb buffer, Seagate
Video: XFX 8000GT 256Mb SLI

It worked great. However, in a while it started having problems
booting up.
When I press power button power led will blink for a fraction of a sec
and that is it. I have to turn it off and disconnect all HDD, CD etc
to power it on. It takes several trails only then it will boot up.
Sometimes it powers up and works for a half of minute or so and then
suddenly shuts off!

Does anybody have an idea what is going on? Thanks.

G 'day There

I cant say that I know what is happening but one place you could start
is with the DDR2 ram, Have you tried to make sure that the ram sticks
are seated properly as bad or incorrectly installed ram can stop a
computer from booting, you might want to take one stick out and try to
see if that works, if it still plays up, switch ram sticks and see if
that works, do you have another power supply you could try, even new
products can be a little funny some times.
Did you change the settings for the ram or CPU in the bios to
something other then auto of default.
That about all that comes to mind at the moment, they are the most
common and easily fixed things to check first.
Sorry if that don't help you.
Cheers
Keith

I guess your system is new and your PS is new?? If so, the following
might not apply:

It sounds to me like you might have some large electrolytics failing in
the Power Supply. I have seen several supplies exhibit the same
symptoms. If you have the proper tools you can ESR the caps and replace
them if necessary or simply try another PS.

If however the PS is new, you might try another brand of comparable size.

Thanks you all guys.
I will check the things that you have mentioned.
Just wanted to let you know that bios settings were default and PS was
brand new. Actually, everithing was new.

I also suspect that PS is a problem cause last night I have noticed
when I turn PS off (switch on the rear panel) and listen carefully I
hear a siffing sound that is coming out of it. Sounds like capacitors
are leaking the charge. I will open it up and look at them.
Also, according to the manual, PS has a safety feature - it won't get
on if voltages are not correct, maybe there is a short curcuit, maybe
there on the capacitors!

Thanks, will see.

Could well be PSU. What make/model? Cheap ($50/£25) give misleading or
even untrue ratings. They struggle to achieve 75% output for any length of
time. When powered on, go into SETUP and check CPU temp and voltages. Volts
should be staedy and +or - 5%.

A very large percentage of start-up problems like yours are due to PSU
issues. You don't mention the brand of your PSU which can be very important.
Never skimp on the quality of your PS. Consider it the heart of your system.
Many manufacturers may list a PSU as 600w, but is really only a 400w with a
600w start-up capability and sometimes that is pushing it.
