New rebuild with the ABIT Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI motherboard - Active USB Ports after shutdown...

Y

yogi

I recently rebuilt my computer and I have noticed that when the
computer has been shut, there is still power to the USB ports.
I have a 4 port USB hub plugged in and it has a blue light built in
and it glows all the time, I have gone over the bios settings and cant
find anything that might be responsible for the active ports.

Does anybody else here have this motherboard or have an idea what I
need to turn of so that the computer will shut down properly.

Cheers
Keith

Main components I used in the rebuild.
Antec Earthwatts 500watt Power Supply (EA-500)
ABIT Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI
Intel® Core™2 Duo E6850 3.00GHz/1333
CORSAIR TWIN2X1024-6400C4 (CM2X1024-6400C4)
ASUS EN8500GT SILENT-HTP-512M (GeForce 8500GT 512mb)
2x SAMSUNG 160gb SATA-2 8meg Cache 7200rpm Model SP161HJ
ASUS DRW-1814BLT-SATA DVD(±R/±RW/±R DL) CD(±R/±RW)

disable all 'wake on' settings
on some boards the 'legacy USB devices' settings can effect this also

It's probably on so you can do a 'power on' from the keyboard.

Try turning off everything in the bios that would let you power up or
return from sleep mode using the keyboard. If that doesn't work, it's
probably normal operation for that board.

I have had another look in the Bios and found Wake up by onchip LAN
was enabled, I had turned all them off during setup, so I disabled
that again, but all Wake up by settings are disabled, anything that is
not needed is disabled, so it might be a feature of this board.

I will have a look around, I might find an ABIT forum and put the
question to them. Thank you for the suggestions.

If it is a powered hub, it is the AC power to the hub that keeps the leds
on.........

G 'day Ed

No, it is not an externally powered hub, it is simply plugged into to
the USB port in the back of the computer.
thanks Ed

I have just posted my question to the tech support at the ABIT web
site and await a reply, they may be able the pinpoint the setting if
any that needs to be disabled, I have advised them of the settings
that I have already disabled.
Thank you and Cheers

Do you have wakeup on(usb) keyboard/mouse enabled?
If so, the supply is taken from the 5Volt standby supply.
On my motherboard(MSI865PE Neo2-P)it is:
USB Device Wakeup From S3 (enabled/disabled)
If enabled, it needs power, even when the computer is off.
On another computer I have seen a strap to choose normal
or standby power.

Hello Sjouke Burry

Thanks for your reply.
I have gone over the settings many times an anything to do with wake
has be disabled like:
ACPI Suspend Type: S3(Suspend-To-Ram)
- USB Resume from S3: Disabled
Power Button Function: 4 Sec Delay
Wake up by Wake# of PCI e: Disabled
Wake up by PME# of PCI: Disabled
Wake up by LAN: Disabled
Wake up by Alarm: Disabled
Power on Function: Button Only
Restore On AC Power Lose: Power Off

The computer is Shutdown, not placed in Standby.

I have asked the Tech's at ABIT if they have any ideas, I hope to hear
back this week.

Cheers

In that case I would search around the usb ports chips
with a magnifying glass to check for power select pins/straps.
If that does not work, put the computer on a switched
mains power block.
Worst advice, rewire the USB +5 connection to the main +5.(fused)

Legacy USB turned off?

Bill
Hello Bill

I did a search of the FATAL1TY FP-IN9's Electronic manual and only
found 2 references to Legacy and they were in the Intergrated
Peripherals, I went into the bios and changed:

OnChip USB: V1.1+V2.0 (If disabled, I have NO USB devices at all)
- USB Keyboard Support: Bios (was OS)
- USB Mouse Support: Bios (was OS)

These changes made no difference to the USB Port being active after
shutdown, the light still glows on the hub. This might be a feature
of the motherboard, If I am going away for an extended time, I will
just have to turn the switch off on the power supply or climb under
the desk and turn off the points to the computer.

I am still waiting for a reply from ABIT Tech support, they might
discover a way the disable the ports on shutdown.

Cheers and thanks

Ok, I have to ask, why worry about it? It's not using a whole lot of
electricity. You are aware that all modern PCs never turn completely
off? There is always some voltage to the motherboard of any PC with an
ATX power supply. I'd look it as a way to charge your Ipod while the
pc is turned off.

G 'day again Bill

I would be happier if I had a complete shutdown, or at least as much
as modern computers and other appliance do that is. I have seen a
couple of burned out computers is recent times, one took the house
with it. If that is a feature of the board then so be it, no great
problem, all I have to do if I am going away for any extended time is
either turn off the power at the power supply or the power point. The
computer was built with a quality power supply so that should make a
lot of difference as far a shorts circuits go.
Well if nothing else, I have trimmed the fat a little in the bios by
disabling the un-necessary settings and transferring those settings to
the manual for when I flash the bios at a later date, I can go back
and re-apply the settings as they are now.

Thanks for your assistance.

Cheers all

Yep, feces will occur.

I pull the plugs out of the all the electronics < PCs, TVs, radios,
routers, etc. > power supplies in case of a lightning strikes when
there are storms or if I'm gone for more than a day. Good precautions.
