power management

I set up power saving on my XP home system and it worked for a while
then for some reason has stopped. The computer will not automatically go
into standby after the time set in Windows.
I can get it to go into standby by using the hotkey set in the BIOS, and
it wakes up to do scheduled tasks but it will no longer switch itself off.

How can I trouble shoot this please?
I've switched off my antispyware software to see if that was the problem
with frequent disk accesses but no difference.
XP Home, Norton AV 2005, Zone Alarm free version, Mailwasher (checking
restricted to daytime and beyond the frequency set for standby switch
off anyway)
Motherboard Foxconn 760GXK8MC

I normally log off from all accounts. Because the computer is not going
into standby automatically I am selecting standby after logging off the
windows user accounts. I have various scheduled tasks set
in the admin account which run overnight - the computer wakes to do them
but does not go off again afterwards.

If I switch all the powersaving off in the BIOS can I still switch on
with a hotkey using powersaving in Windows?

Many thanks.

Robert,
I have the same issue. My understanding is this can happen in Windows. A
driver of application runs that zapped the full power settings. IF you find
out anything I'd love to know it. My pc will sometimes go into Standby, but
will not Hibernate w/o using the Hotkey. I worked on this for a few wks and
decided it was more trouble than it was worth.
My old PC (P3 - 450) never went to standby and I got by just fine<g>.

What has changed since the last time it worked. Did you install any apps or
updates to those apps?

no new apps, but of course Windows and all the security apps are
updating constantly.

It seems to be working again after I made all accounts admin, reentered
all the power saving settings in Windows, reverted the user accounts
back to limited access, fiddled with the BIOS setting - but could NOT
turn off the main power management setting in the BIOS without throwing
Windows into an endless boot cycle. (I also have BootItNG installed)
But this morning the computer was in standby. So it is working again but
I am not sure why!

Thanks anyway

Robert, I see that you have migrated from the BT Broadband support groups!
I am anticipating upgrading to XP in the very near future, so I am all ears
if you have any tips and of course recommendations.

My advice, now on my 3rd computer in a short time (dell) is to disable
power management completely; it hasn't worked well on any one of the 3
dell computers I have. I read users' comments who wrote that PM is
really only good or compatible with notebooks.
