power failure

Hi! Yesterday we had several power failures in our area. After one of them I
started my computer and I allowed "chkdsk.exe" to run. It had arrived till
"Step 4 of 5" - "Checking file..." (up to "57% completed") when another power
failure occured. When I turned on my computer again, Windows wouldn't start.
It displays the menu regarding 'starting windows in safe mode... last known
good config and start windows normally'. I have tried each option but each
time it displays a blue screen for a very short time, impossible for me to
read, and it starts over and so on and so forth. I use Windows XP
Professional SP2 and my HDD is NTFS.
I would appreciate any usefull suggestion.

Try booting from the windows XP installation CD and entering the
recovery console -- press the first R for repair. Once in the recovery
console run a chkdsk /p on the drive. See if that fixes things. I do
hope you have a complete backup. If this doesn't work your next option
is a repair install and if that doesn't work then a clean install.

a) stop paying electricity bills until your provider sorts out their cables
:)
b) boot from CD with your XP cd inserted.

My point is, a) was a jovial "suggestion" where as b) was the helpful
suggestion.
I did insert the ob:smiley emotive to indicate this.

Buy a UPS, about $40 and do a repair install.

How long are the power outs? You can get a fairly inexpensive backup
UPS for about $30 at electronics stores. They don't have to fancy
comm ports but they will provide power to your box for about five or
ten minutes, which usually takes care of most short outages.

I run two UPSs - one described above for my desktop computer and a
more expensive UPS with USB connections for my Win2003 Server box.
I've never had a day's trouble with power outages since installing
them.
