Since a power failure I have been unable to open windows. It strts to open
and then fails and screen blacks out. On error log I can see multiple NIC
failures on each attempt to start up windows.

Any ideas thanks

boot with your XP cd and from the repair console run chkdsk /r

You may be able to "Disable" LAN in your BIOS, temporarily, to start Windows.
If it's part of the MoBo, prepare yourself for further MoBo failure.
[After an identical situation, I disabled (onboard) LAN, and used a PCI card
for a short time. Had enough time to check RAM and HDD before motherboard
"died".]
