I am having (at least) 2 problems after installing SP2
for XP-Home. They may be related.

1) The network setup wizard takes 12 - 15 HOURS to
complete ... unbelievable. During the time it is running,
the CPU is running at 100% continuously. Prior to SP2 it
only took a couple of minutes.

2) When switching which dialup connection is the shared
connection (I have 3 to choose from) the process also
takes 12 - 15 hours to complete (upon hitting the OK
button).

I suspect something is really wrong but can't put my
finger on it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Review Event Viewer logs and see if there is a clue to the source,
especially any service that is reported as failing to start. Boot to
safe mode. Run a complete virus scan. Reboot. From a command prompt
run system file checker; sfc[space]scannow. This will replace any
corrupt or missing system files. Defrag.

Consult the modem or computer vendor and find the latest driver. Google
for lspfix.exe and winsockxpfix.exe, run both to fix layered services
(TCP/IP stack) and winsock. I would remove all traces of the dialup
connections and start over clean if these steps do not help. Run the
wizard so that it can automatically take care of opening the correct
ports for the dialup, if using the Windows firewall.

....and, if a connection cannot be made within a few minutes, terminate
the attempt from task manager rather than waiting for a time out.
