Post SP2 Networking

I thought I had gotten away with a trouble free installation on my three
machines. But ----

My laptop (XPPro) and my desktop (XPhome) are connected through a
router. After SP2, my shared folders under SP1 still show up in My
Network Places on each machine and I can process them as always. But
now I cannot share another, additional folder from either machine. If I
try to share another folder, it shows up in My Network Places on the
machine on which I created the share but never shows up in My Network
Places on the other machine.

Firewalls on both machines are set on with the 'Do not allow exceptions'
unchecked. Disabling the firewalls entirely doesn't change anything --
No new shares show up on the other machine.

Do I need to do something other than what I was used to doing under SP1
to share additional folders under SP2?

Thank you.

In Windows Explorer, View->Refresh

Well, refreshing the screen which displays the shared folders works
for me too, but these machines are desktops, no laptops, though
I think laptops are unlikely to be the issue. How frequently are changes
propagated throughout the network?

Thank you but refreshing here doesn't solve the problem.

This is the first time in several months that I have tried to share an
additional folder so to answer your question -- not often.

I meant did you wait long enough for the addition to show
up on the other computer? Probably you did.

Did you check the "good" shared folders to see if you could
actually read files listed inside that folder. If the network breaks
sometimes the old information gets displayed for awhile. So check
on both computers that the old shared folders' content can be read.

Both computers should have the same subnet address and you
should be able to _ping_ the Ip address of the other computer in
both directions. It sounds like the computers are actually
networked is why I'm going into making sure they are networked.
Transfer a file from one shared folder on Computer A to another
shared folder on Computer B (one that is supposed to be working).

A couple of other things: can you observe the shared cupped hand
under the folder you just recently shared?

Also the SP2 Windows Firewall is turned on by default. Networked
computers must share the same subnet which is why I mentioned it earlier.

Stephen,

Thank you very much. Yes, I was able to transfer files from one of the
old share folders on each machine to the other. Only the newly shared
folder wouldn't show up in the Desktop's My Network Places window.

Here is where I am happily now.

I looked at the workgroup (MSHOME) via Explorer and found a whole bunch
of old, outdated and no longer wanted share folders. I couldn't find a
way to remove them and, besides, there were too many to conveniently
remove one by one anyway. So I simply said, "What the heck. Lets just
set up a new connection with a new workgroup name (I never was thrilled
with MSHOME as a name anyway.) and so I did.

Things work as expected now and I am a happy camper. Like my wife
often says, I have just been a sloppy housekeeper over the years.

Thanks again.
