Possible virus on XP Pro laptop - Help

I have a user who has a situation of whenever he launches internet explorer, he gets a popup message saying that Windows installer is trying to install an Office XP component. He has to cancel out of it, and then he finds that his start page has been re-assigned. Now I now from the start page that he's probably had adware/spyware installed on his machine, but would something like that also cause the Windows Installer to kick off? If so, any special way to get rid of this, or will something like Spybot take care of this?

Thanks
