A friend has a Dell Desk top at home running XP Home and he is the only user.
It used to go straight to the desktop when he started the machine up but now
it shows a box asking for a password. He wants to go back to the way it was
so he can turn it on and go get his morning coffee or something and come back
to find his desktop waiting for him. He has tried restoring the machine to a
point before it was like this to no avail.

Thanks for any help

Have your friend go to START then RUN and type in the following
control userpasswords2
press ENTER or click on OK
In the next window, uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password"
In the next window, change "Administrator" to his/her log on name and leave the password line blank.
Close all windows per the prompts and reboot the computer.
It should now automatically log your friend in without prompts.

Thanks for such a quick answer. I will give this information to him and let
you know if it worked for him.
