possible flaw in spyware

I had a file(C/program files/Microsoft antispyware/errors
log)3 GIGS in size and growing.Found it by running disc
keeper and seeing a huge fragmented area.Ran the norton
defrag which named the specific fragged file.Deleted it
to get back space.Microsoft better get working and get
their act together.

You've definitely hit a bug, which I've seen as well.

Was this with build .501, or .509 (see help, about)--if this install is
still available?

In my case, I uninstalled the beta, and a week or so later, reinstalled it
on the same machine, and haven't had any recurrence.

What version of Windows?

Thanks--that knocks out one theory I had. I had the problem on a Windows
2000 server, and I thought that perhaps multiple users (via administrative
mode Terminal Services) might have been a reason for the error log taking
off. It got big enough that I didn't have the tools to extract anything
useful from it and blew it away to keep it from killing the server.

Forgot to mention.....File was too big for notepad so I
deleted it and watched it grow again then opened the
smaller one.....it was the same line repeated over and
over(1 per second)...I pity the people who get this
sucker and watch their hard drive bloat up with this not
knowing what's doing it.I'm pretty good at checking my
computer and I basically luck'ed into finding this
thing.New install working OK so far.One more problem with
it and I'll bury it along side SP2 which gave me so many
switch-user headaches that I permanently uninstalled it.

There was a point at which Microsoft was interested in hearing what the
error message was that repeated.

I suspect they have this pegged by now, but they might still be interested.

What did you run into with SP2--I haven't seen any issues at all with it,
either at home or at work. It is significantly more secure than previous
versions. And, it will be a requirement for some things you will likely
want--Internet Explorer version 7, perhaps.

Like a Dummie I blew it away without saving it.I made the
same mistake with a pile of real sneaky spyware I picked
up a la CLOSEMEETFIND,UPLONG,BUILDGREYetc.etc.A great guy
at Webroot was really intrigued that I couldn't get rid
of it.I went through all my partitions (8) any found a
bunch of sneaky folders (16)...blew them away and
voila,no more probs.Told the fellow what I did after
sending a"highjack this" log to him without the guilty
files.He wasn't too thrilled.I'll learn.Installed SP2
over the net following every published precaution.I
couldn't switch users. It would freeze on the wallpaper of
the user(without icons etc.) Had to reboot to use another
user.Uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times to no avail.I
may just buy an OEM disc with SP2 alresdy on it.We'll see.

Another thing to try, in terms of SP2, is the network administrator full
download--if you have a fast Internet connection, or somewhere you can use
one and burn a CD. Some folks find that it does better for them--I can't
give a good technical reason why, though.

You should check that you are on the latest video driver from the vendor.

Googling on your symptom, one thread sounding similar blamed it on a mouse
driver, of all things--changing that made the problem go away.

I tend to be sloppy when cleaning--I know what I think is bad and what is
good, and I check, but I tend to blow things away without spending the time
to document carefully what I found, and what I did with it.
I get interested in the chase and forget that documenting it could be useful
for others.

Merci buckets guys...will try and I'll advise. If this
doesn't work I'll just get an OEM with SP2 already
installed. Thanx,Dick
