Porting pst Files (email, contacts, etc.) and settngs in a new com

Outlook.pst moved to an external hard drive.
Old notebook running XP Pro.
New notebook running Vista Business.
Both notebooks running Office 2003 Pro, including Outlook.
Moved the Outlook.pst file to the appropriate location in the new computer.
No give. Still wants me to set up email settings. Can't figure out how to
import.
Help.

That's not how it works.
Configure Outlook with your mail settings first.
Afterwards you can connect your pst-file via File-> Open-> Outlook Data
File...

Hi there,

I didn't get that clearly, but still I consider that you are trying to
import a PST file which was exported from a different machine.

Steps:

1. Locate the exported PST file in the new Vista Machine where ever you wish.
2. Open MS Outlook 2003 and go to File->Open->Outlook Data File-> and locate
the PST file you transferred. -> Click open.
3. Now you can see the folder structure in the Folder list view at your left
side.

These are correct and constitute the best way to add a PST to Outlook, but I
want to make it clear that this is NOT importing. Also, once you've aded the
moved PST, if you want it's folders to be the default, then you must make the
PST your delivery location. Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. Change the "Deliver
new messages to the following location" drop-down at the lower left to be the
PST you added. Stop and restart Outlook.

What is the difference between importing and opening a PST?

Importing creates a needless copy of the pst-file and loses several settings
that are kept in the pst-file itself. Also, it could take a long time to
complete.
Opening the file is direct.

It's the same difference as opening a Word file or importing it into a new
document each time.
