Hi All
Have been working on a friend's AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 1.53GHz, 248MB RAM, 40GB HDD with XPSP2. It had slowed right down since her son has been using it, so I have defragmented and cleaned up the HD and got rid of songs, games, etc.
I used the Bull.... security software to scan the HD (not been done since Oct 06, and then only for 45min) and it turned up 94 problem files and it sorted out most of them.
The main problem is pop-ups - have tried everything I could think of - blocker is on and at the highest level, latest Google toolbar. Tried a McAfee scan and this turned up one virus adware and PUPs.
Still getting up to 10 pop-ups in short time.
Going to install an additional Gig of RAM to sort out speed problem but could really do with advice on the pop-ups.
Thanks in advance

Installed spyware/malware can be a cause for popups. AV programs, like McAfee ain't that good at detecting these.

You will need, Sywareblaster, SpyBotSearch&Destroy, Windows Defender and the kitchen sink in the guise of either SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor.

Post a HijackThis log file and we'll take a look ... :thumb:

Ran Spybot on this problem and after several scans and restarts got down to one problem - Smitfraud-C.CoreService. It could not get rid of this and when I tried to download Spydoctor and Skysweeper as suggested, they would not download, giving the message 'Cannot download due to security settings', but I had switched off all security.
Have Googled this and it seems serious, associated with popups for fraudulent spyware correction and is in System. This PC now only gets about four popups, for loans, dating, etc but they now fail to open - so some improvement.
BTW I downloaded Spydoctor on my laptop with no problem - could this program be preventing the downloads on the PC?
Cheers

... could this program be preventing the downloads on the PC?
Yup, it could.

Neither Spyware Doctor or Spy Sweeper are free, annoyingly, although they may find 'nasties' they will not clean the system unless you buy ... but INHO one of them is an essential piece of security software.

As I said, download install HJT and post a log here ...

Before you do that, turn off System Restore

right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Tick Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart the computer

You can turn it back on after we clean the system up. :thumb:

Sorry to be slow on the uptake but I see what you need now.
Think I will bring the PC home to work on - should be ok as none of the other networked PCs on site have any problem.

Hi Mucks
Cannot get to the faulty PC until Monday and am concerned it will not let me download anything, so will download HijackThis onto my PC and try to burn a CD.
Have printed off a tutorial so I don't mess it up when I supply you with the info.
Thanks

Hi
Could not download HijackThis to the faulty PC but it worked from a CD burned on my PC. Tried to post results on the forum but could only enter the title and could not get a cursor on the message screen. So home again with a CD of the HiJack files and hope to see them here:

Hi Mucks
Am enjoying it -another little step into the unknown - off to the PC on the other side of town now. Will first backup my friend's Sage files to an external HD.

Son is definately banned from the PC and eventually cars (I hope). I am replacing XP with Win 98 on an old Panasonic P3 laptop for him.
Having great fun and hooked on finding out about registry stuff - have found a book on Amazon.
My friend backs up Sage Payroll to CD but searching for original Sage authentication code in case something goes wrong and the program has to be reinstalled.
However I'm sure it will be ok. Going for it tomorrow as the old eyes tire at about this time!
Thanks again for the help. Will report back.

Right - give the big b....r the Slackware disks, tell him how to format the HD (or not) and then it's up to him. Not quite what you suggested but could keep him out of trouble for weeks after GCSEs!
Thanks again

No! Can't be that cruel - I knew j--k s--t before I joined the forum. I will supply him with a 255-page Slackware tutorial that I downloaded about a year ago.
Also to be fair the Bull---- security on the said PC did not seem to be sure whether the firewall was on or off.

Back again!
Nearly there - had trouble with an 03 and an 20 file due to a program I had missed earlier. Uninstalled that and was able to delete all files in your list.
Only getting an occasional pop-up of url cpvfeed.com now but it does not open, overall a spectacular improvement. Here is the latest log -

OK, great work ... the Log is clean of any nasties, however, there are some things I see I don't like ...

These entries I also suggest cleaning out ... get HJT to fix;

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://members.freewebs.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://members14.freewebs.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.freewebs.com

I will bet 5p those above should not be there in the trusted zone ... unless you know they were added for some reason.

O4 - Global Startup: Image Transfer.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: LUMIX Simple Viewer.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: officejet 6100.lnk = ?
C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\VIRUSS~1\mcvsshld.exe ... this has got to be the best joke. I suggest fixing it also. :D

I also suggest un-installing McAfee, it err, was pretty useless, no? I'm not happy with that Sony software stuff either.

If you are still getting popups, then they are coming directly from an installed program ... such as this lot of crap;
Realplayer
QuickTime
Sony Shared

Anyway, what else have you tried in helping to clean up this mess. :thumb:

Hi Mucks
Thanks for that - yes there is a lot of stuff that does not need to be on this PC - there are others on the network for the play stuff.
Have scanned with Bullguard and McAfee, disk clean-up and uninstalled lots of programs and used Spybot Search and Destroy. Will have another go with your latest list and report back.
Cheers

Not heard of this Bulguard you is using ... do me a favour, go get SuperAntispyware and run it through that system.
