I would recommend that you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 for
more protection and take a look at Microsoft Windows Defender (free
software) to get rid of any spyware and ads. The program has real-time
protection so it will provide protection while you work.

It would possibly be fatal for the OP to try and install Service Pack 2
on an infested machine. Defender is still beta and it is a Golden Rule
to *never* install beta software on a production machine or on any
computer which you are unwilling to wipe.

The OP should clean up his/her computer first or take it to a
professional.

Of course they should first clean the machine (I would still recommend
Windows Defender as has worked better than SpyBot, Adaware and others
in out environment of 400+ PCs) before installing the Service Pack.
Depending on the infection (there's almost never one spyware program
installed) it might actually be best to start fresh (if possible, of
course).
