I have tried several free pop up blockers (including one I had before) and the few I can now download won't install. Zero PopUp won't even download. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi there,

Try this:

The following Web site offers a free download called Internet Organizer Pro
2.1:

http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2381-10111435.html

Alternatively, you can also download and install the Ad-Aware spyware
removal utility from the following Web site:
http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml

Also:

1. Click Start and select Run.

2. Type MSConfig and press Enter.

3. Click the Startup tab.

4. From the list, deselect all the programs.

5. Click OK.

6. Restart the system.

Also, Windows Messenger Service windows pop up continuously on your scree.
You can disable the Windows Messenger Service by following

these steps:

1. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.

2. Click Performance and Maintenance.

3. Click Administrative Tools.

4. Double-click Services.

5. Scroll down and select Messenger.

6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

7. Click the Stop button.

8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar.

9. Click OK.

Alternatively, you can follow these steps to disable Messenger Services from
Windows:

1. Click Start and Run.

2. Type services.msc in the Open box and click OK

3. Scroll down to Messenger in the right pane.

4. Double-click Messenger and click the General tab.

5. Under Service Status, click the Stop button.

6. In the Startup Type drop-down box, select Disable.

7. Click Apply and OK.

8. Restart the computer.

Windows Messenger Service windows as well as other advertisements should no
longer pop up on your screen.

If these are "Messenger" pop-ups, they can be banished by enabling the XP
built-in firewall (which should be done anyway). See HELP & SUPPORT for
easy instructions.

If this is a program that has been inadvertently installed on your PC,
running ADAware may enable its removal. http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Read the instructions, download, install and run the program. The basic
utility is free. Or try Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/

If the pop-ups are site-related - the page that is being visited - then a
pop-up blocker may help. http://google.com Search for "ad blocker".
Or install and use a new-generation browser that has pop-up blocking,
such as the Mozilla suite from http://mozilla.org.

It will selectively block pop-ups and images, and is much more customizable
than I.E. For more, check in with these groups…

I tried Zero PopUp Killer Toolbar , the Google search bar w/popup blocker and a couple from WinSite. I had the Zero PopUp Killer Toolbar installed and working before coolwwwsearch invaded my registry. I have had problems ever since.CWShredder eliminated my browser hijacking problem , but now I have the previously stated problems. I couldn't even download CleanReg.

Alaric....

I have had the exact same problem here after running the same programs...... I fixed it by running a progam from 'my download directory' on my system...could be different on yours....it is created by CW Shredder....to remove the IE restrictions you/CW placed on your IE............and the name is..

IE_reset_restrictions.re

run this from your RUN command line and it will as if you really want to add this to the registry... just say YES and everything is back to normal......

BUT just incase...make a backup of your registry FIRST....as should always be done before messing with it anyway.... like we should have done be fore running CW Shredder......

hope this helps.

Im sorry sir ... I miss spoke in my prior reply.... here is the address for repairing your registry using the IE_registry_restictions thingy I spoke about...

Automated methods

these are from...............

www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm#Restriction

Method 1

If you are using Spybot S&D, disable the option
"Lock IE control panel against opening from within IE
[Tip from MVP Mike Burgess

Method 2
"Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs". Download the REG fix and double-click it
^^^ download this from the above website..

This problem can also be caused by spyware. Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the malware products. Re-apply the above fix if necessary. Don't forget to update the pattern file using WebUpdate in Ad-Aware

Here are the steps
1. Start Ad-Aware.
2. Click "Check for Updates", "Connect" and download the latest pattern file if available. and click Finish
3. Click "Start" "Next" [System will now detect the spyware
4. After the scan is finished, click "Next
5. Select all the items (checkboxes
Right click on any object in the "Scan result" list and choose [Select all objects
6. Click Next and click OK to confirm spyware removal

Have you tried Mozilla? POP up blocker is built in.

I tried Mozilla once and it started hijacking my searches from IE. I liked Mozilla but couldn't tolerate it's refusal to stay where I put it.
