I receive the following error on a client computer on my SBS2003 network whe
n trying to access email with Outlook Express:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'xleng.com_Keith', Server: 'pop3.covadmail.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I have tried importing account settings for another email account known to
work on other clients on our network, and I still get the same results.
Also, if I export this account to another client machine, it works fine. I
have also received a similar error when using Thunderbird as the mail client
on this machine.

This is a brand new computer with XP pro installed. I have removed the
anti-virus software on it. The machine connects to the internet through a
proxy (ISA Server).

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

you may want to use telnet to diagnose the connection.

How to retrive email using telnet To troubleshoot POP3 issue, you can telnet to port 110 to diagnose the connection. You can also use telnet retrieve an email from a remote server. ...

Robert,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried telnetting into the pop3 server, and it
doesn't work. I tried it from another client computer (just to make sure I
wasn't stupid) and it worked fine. So, at least I'm not stupid! Anyway, if
telnetting doesn't even get as far as the mail server, what do you think it
means? Could this be hardware related?

Thanks again,

Keith65
