What type of pop-ups are you referring to, be more specific.

If Windows Messenger continually opens what you need to do is make sure you
have signed out completely and correctly using the messengers file button at
the top of the main messenge window then after it signs out click the file
button again and select close, you may have to open it first by going to
Start>All Programs>Windows Messenger, it's strange and it is annoying but it
is designed for Windows to stay active constantly for the updater service,
from what I have been told on several occassions is that there is no way to
deactivate it, I have had to get used to it being there and inadvertantly
making friends with it by just letting it do what it has to and making sure
that it is signed out and closed out. What you can also do is if you are
running XP you can disable the Windows Active Updater manually and it will
not run constanly. to do this:
Start>right click My Computer>select Properties
when the System Properties window opens you will see tabs at the top select
the one that says "Automatic Updates" then uncheck the box where it says
something about keep my computer up to date...

Hope this helps.

Let me know how I did, repost

Hi Doug,

The "Messenger" service in Windows and Windows Messenger the application have *nothing* to do
with WindowsUpdate (Automatic Updates or otherwise).

Do *not* turn off Automatic Updates (to fix this anyway).

Greetings,

Do these "popups" that are appearing have "Messenger Service" in their titlebar? If so, what
you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger (which
are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor can
Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start, then Run,
enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then
choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then choose the 'Stop' button.
After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any real third-party
applications should be effected by this.

Thank you for this I have been trying to get rid of all updaters and
alerters since I bought my new computer, and you wouldn't beleive how many
attempts I have made at a resolution with my PC's manufacturer, over and
over I was told that the built in Messenger could not be disabled because of
the fact that it is built-in. I personally do not allow any updaters of any
sort, I use only dial-up and find it extrememly annoying when I am in the
middle of something to be disrupted repetedly by updater alerts. I consider
myself to be active enough with maintenance and health of my PC to the
extent that I usually run any and all virus or other computer protection
program at least once a week or when runnning then, and it is my hopes that
since I am subscribed to Microsoft's Security Notification, that I will be
made aware of any updates from them that I haven't already made.

Hi Douglas,

The Messenger Service is for quick messages across networks, it has no other purpose and can
be disabled with no problems. In fact in the next service pack of Windows XP, the service is
*disabled* right out of the box (or rather, after installation). So, whoever has been
feeding you such information is completely and absolutely incorrect.

Glad to get this cleared up =).
