Pop-ups where they didn't used to be

While searching for a website that provided free webspace
with no limit on file size, one website must have altered
something on my computer, because now, when I exit
Internet Explorer, no matter what site I am on, a pop-up
appears. Even on sites where this did not occur in the
past, ads are now starting to pop-up. Is there something
I can do to stop this?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
