pop-ups in grey boxes

Mic

Hello,

I am constantly receiving the pop-up messages in the grey
boxes - sometimes up to 15 in one hour. I have called
Microsoft and the rep. was unable to offer any advice or
solutions. Do any of you know how I can rid of these. I
have Ad-aware but it hasn't helped.

Thanks,

Mic

If your messages look like this: http://tinyurl.com/is9k

The messages are coming from "The Messenger Service" (NOT MSN Messenger)

However, the messenger service is not the problem.
The real problem is the fact that you are not running a firewall, or if you
are, you haven't blocked ports 137-139

A good firewall can be found at www.zonelabs.com

To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your
computer, you can disable the Messenger service.
Its easy to reverse at a later time if you wish to do so.

The small (free) "ShootTheMessenger" Messenger service enabler/disabler will
turn off the messenger services for you.

http://grc.com/

Or you can do it manually.

*Windows XP Home*
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

*Windows XP Professional*
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Mic;
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

I had that happen too . I started using a firewall and
that stopped it. Hope that helps , Harvey
