Poor performance

A friend of mine uses AOL alot and just the other day she
tried to log in and her computer just hung. She could
click a couple of icons but after that the mouse just
hung with that I'm working on it hourglass icon. And
thats what it does when you do get a screen it takes
forever and that is if you get a screen.Tried defraging
and that just sits there. Please help if someone can.
