Plug and play wants to install device already installed

I just converted from Windows 98SE to XP Professional.
All my hardware devices are now operating, some with new
drivers.

Each time I boot into XP, it wants to install an Agfa
(Studio Star) scanner with a SCSI connection that is
working properly. Each cancellation of the request to
install, results in another request...up to 6 before XP
stops asking.

The device manager shows multiple connections to the same
device, some of which I cannot delete, ("uninstall").

The scanner continues to work OK through all of this
annoyance.

If there is no solution, is there a way to manually
(temporarily) disable plug and play?

Thanks for any help.

.
You can disable plug and play (not to be confused with
universal plug and play, which you should disable and
leave it that way) through admin tools> services
However I don't believe that this is your best choice.
