Plug and Play / Sound not working

I have recently started up my computer, it starts up normally to the desktop,
loads for about 10 seconds and then reboots. I then started it in safe mode
and disabled everything on start up. Adding things back to start up one by
one, by typing msconfig in the run menu to bring up the system configuration
utility, I have found it to be under services, then Plug and Play by
Microsoft Corporation. This means now i have a computer without sound, and
I'm assuming no plug and play so my keyboard comes up with an error message
every restart. I was just wondering how to fix the problem and get sound and
plug and play working?

Thanks
Alastair

Just noticed that at start up of the bios, it says that the secondary IDE
Channel has no 80 conductor cable installed. Not sure if this is connected to
this error or if it si a seperate one?

It is only a problem if you have a second hard drive that is UDMA capable.
If using a 40 wire cable instead of the recommended 80 wire, the volumes on
that drive may not mount. If they do mount, they will run very slowly and
can cause errors. Best to use an 80 wire cable. It works with both types of
drives, those requiring 80 wire and the older 40 wire drives.

If there are no drives on your secondary controller (disk drive, optical or
other IDE devices), disable it to avoid seeing the message about a lack of
an 80 wire cable.
