Plug and play software device enumerator problem

Can anyone help, i was fiddling with my pc yesterday and
now have a problem with the Plug and play software device
enumerator. It displays this message in the device manager

This device is not working properly because Windows
cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code
31)

Now my onboard ac97 soundcard will not work and I keep
having to do a disk scan when xp loads up

any ideas gratefully recieved.

Tim;
Try system Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Or:
Go to the motherboard/computer manufacturers website and get the
latest Windows XP sound driver.
