Hi,

I am tearing my hear out literally...

This is the story as brief as possible.

I have an Nvidia gforce4 Ti graphics card installed on
the machine, BUT it does not show up on the Device
Manager options in display adapters, it seems to be
picking up an ATI Technologies Inc, RAGE 128 VR PCI card
instead. I do not know that my machie has a card of this
kind I certainly cannot see one (it also shows and
exclamation mark next to it) and when you go into it's
properties it has in the Device status box: This device
cannot start. (Code 10).

I have downloaded the proper drivers from the internet
for the graphics card and I install the drivers BUT still
get the same card showing in device adapters.

Please can someone help / advise me what to do I am at my
wits end.

Kind Regards.

Peter Flint.

Try booting into Safe Mode and opening Device Manager and removing ALL video
cards and drivers. Reboot and see if Windows can re-identify things.

The exclamation mark is telling you it is not setup properly. It has been my experience that in order to install a different driver, you need to remove the one that is there first. Then when you reboot, Windows will attempt to install what it identifies as 'new hardware device'. That is your chance to install a specific (instead of a Windows default) driver.

Your machine may have a built-in video chipset that is interfering with the
detection of th Nvidia card. If you look at the back of the machine, is
there anyplace to physically attach a monitor other than the Nvidia card? If
so, that is the other video output and you would need to disable that in the
system BIOS.

I have gone info safe mode and removed the Display
Adapter, BUT when I reboot it does not pick up any
display adapter. I have checked in Device Manager but
there is not hardware listed there.

In your first reply you said remove ALL video adapters.
What else would I find in Device Manager? The only other
one seems to be Sound Video and Game controllers. Should
I remove that also?

Thanks for the help.

Tim Hi,

Thanks for replying...I have checked but there is NO
other place I can plug in my monitor other than the
Nvidia card.

Is there anything else I could try? I do have another
type of sound card on the machine...could this be
interfeering with the Nvidia card?

Kind Regards.

Peter Flint.

Hi, Peter. You poor thing - you're still struggling with this! In Device
Manager, enable Show Hidden Devices. Now look under Display Adapters
(don't bother with the sound card settings!) and delete everything
except standard vga. Now reboot and with any luck, Windows will find
the right adapter. If it doesn't, you might consider calling a computer
repair person to come to the house and fix things.

Best of luck,

Malke

I would do this.

Start - Run - MSConfig.exe and in the Boot.ini page check /BASEVIDEO
Don't reboot immediately on exit

Then in Device Manager uninstall that ATI card and reboot. using just
basic video drivers.

Then install a download of suitable drivers from www.nvidia.com
(and uncheck the box in msconfig before the install reboots to bring
them into use)
