please please help

i am trying to sign on to my computer, when i get on the Windows XP window
shows and then the little green bar on the bottom starts to move like its
loading and then the screen just goes black. there is no desktop , no tool
bar, no start up menu, nothing just plain black. I get the same thing even
when i try to get on in safe mode. What can be the problem and what do i do
to solve it. Please please help me. Thanks for your time.

Its is a Dell Dimension 4300. The program is windows XP. The screen goes
black after the windows XP screen pops up. The screen with the little green
bar running across. When that screen is done the screen just goes black

Setup screen, press ENTER to set up Windows XP.
2. Press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
3. Use the ARROW keys to select the Windows XP installation that you
want to repair, and then press R.

automatically restarts, and then the Setup program finishes the repair of
your Windows XP installation.

the tool bar and would like to know how she resolved it.
