HELP - Service pack2 and XP Pro 2001!

Mr. R's Reply

Yes, I know. I've waited too long to fix this problem. Microsoft update keeps
buggin' me to install Service Pack2, but everytime I do it downloads fine and
then asks me to reboot. When I do that it starts up, but then does not reboot
back to the Windows XP sign-in page. It stays in the black and then I have to
use safe mode and revert back to an earlier save when things worked! I hate
this! Please help me solve this annoying problem. PLEASE!

When I do that I get the error message: The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by
another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the
next time the system restarts? <Y/N>

I assume that I should type Y and then type EXIT on the next line that
appears?

Also, do I need to install service pack 2 if the service pack 3 is already
out?

Ok, so I thought I installed service pack 3 and I rebooted, but when I went
to iTunes to try and download their software I received an error message
stating that I needed service pack 2 or higher to use their stuff??? I suck!

Sound like you might have an older version of iTunes which does not
detect the SP3 install.

Thanks for the suggestions (both of you). I finally got the chkdsk to work (I
think?) and then I downloaded service pack2 and waited forever. Eventually,
around 2am I went to bed and left the machine to run itself. When I awoke at
5:30am the system was rebooting and rebooting, but never reaching windows. I
got an error message apologizing for my inconvenience, but that service pack
2 had errors installing and if I wanted I could revert to the last good
configuration, but when I did it still wouldn't reboot. I, as usual, had to
use safe mode and then revert. I am at the same old place again! : ( I
really thought I had it this time.

A recommended way to install a service pack is to "clean-boot" Xp and
download the full install of SP2 (for network admin.) Make sure to
turn off antivirus scanners / sheild modules.

What is a "clean-boot" and how do I do it?? Sorry I took so long to reply. I
was busy and couldn't deal with this stupid thing! I'm frustrated . . . . I
even found an installation that's supposed to fix the rebooting problem, but
one has to have servicepack2 installed first!??

Thanks! I went there and read. Then I tried the clean-boot. The only
possible solution left is that I obtained my copy of XP from my admin at my
last job (we used to work from home a lot) and I no longer work there. It's
been years, in fact! I was never asked to return or delete the XP from my PC,
only the files relating to my work (were consultants),so I just kept using
it. I'm sure the company has updated their version of Windows and maybe the
keys have changed?? What do I do now? I have to buy a new copy of XP, right?
That sucks!

Not necessarily. Where did you get this PC from? Is it also from your
last job? What is the make and model? Does it have a Certificate of
Authenticity sticker on it?

No, my current PC is homemade. No authenticity sticker on it. My copy of XP
is on a disk (also copied) with key codes written across it. My admin was
from SAT America, IT geek who always got me what I needed with no hassles?! I
left there about 5 years ago.

My PC is powered by an AMD64 Athlon and controlled by ASUS with about 500GB
of storage.

So, I need to buy a fresh XP, don't I?

Yes. Or you could run a Linux distro for free. :)
