Unmountable Boot Volume means the hard drive that XP resides on
cannot be found or used. This can mean the drive has "Crashed" or
that it's data structure is damaged. The first thing you must do, is see
if BIOS (Similar to a Starter motor on a Car) can detect the drive.
You must enter BIOS setup (Via a Key Press of Del, F1, F2) to get
access. Once inside there will be a table or category that shows the
hard drive/CD/DVD devices on your IDE controller. While inside the
BIOS, you'll need to change the Boot Device/Sequencing, so the CD
drive boots before the hard drive. Usually, the default sequencing is
Floppy Disk, Hard drive. If the drive is detected (WDC1023 or a
similar descriptor), then you need to boot the Windows XP CD-ROM
and take the Recovery Console option. If prompted for a password,
just press Enter. Once a prompt > appears, type Chkdsk C: /F and
the process will scan/repair the system partition.
If this process is a little overwhelming - consider taking the PC to a
local repair shop for diagnosing. Hopefully, you have your personal
data backed up.
