PLEASE HELP: Secondary IDE not showing up...

D

Doug

I just installed Windows XP and my secondary IDE is not
showing up when I go to Windows Explorer. I have two IDE
drives installed in my machine (Pentium 4 CPU). The
Primary IDE is showing up as my "C" drive, but my
secondary IDE drive is not showing up at all. It should
be my "D" drive, but instead, my "D" drive is my CDRW.
How do I get XP to recognize my secondary IDE drive?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check your cable first to see if it is plugged in
good...Also make sure you have your drive set to slave on
the drive itself...via the pin in the back. check your
bios...does it see the slave drive.

1) Did you check your bios to make sure Auto Detect is enable for the
drive?

2) Make sure you got your pins set correctly.

3) if all else fail, why not move the harddrive over to the second IDE
cable?

If your CD-RW is on the secondary controller, and if you see it (the CD-RW)
in Explorer - the 2nd IDE channel IS being recognized.

Things to check:
BIOS - Both Primary and Secondary controllers are enabled.
XP Dev Manager - Under ATAPI/IDE that both a Primary &
Secondary controller are listed.
Also: Verify on the controllers in Advanced that the M/S
Devices are not set to NONE

The normal procedure here to get XP to recognize the secondary IDE would be to shut down, disconnect the secondary IDE cable at the motherboard, reboot and then shut down again. Reconnect the cable and reboot. XP should now see the secondary IDE.

I'd avoid the tempatation to put any drives, other than hard drives, on the primary IDE. CD and DVD burners will tend to slow the hard drive down. Put those devices on the secondary IDE. Check your computer manufacturer's documentation to see if they should be jumpered master-slave or cable select. Most newer computers use cable select.
