Please help! No automatic restore points

I just got a new computer from Systemax on Monday with Vista Ultimate. I just noticed today that I have no automatic
restore points. I can create manual ones but not automatic ones.

I called Systemax and they said they can't fix it unless I send it back to them and they reload the OS. This would take
about 10 business days to do.
I am hoping there is something in the registry I can change to fix this.

They said I have a DSP version and not a OEM because all they support is to have the OS load into Windows and nothing
else.
My Vista DVD just says Microsoft Vista OEM NOT DSP.

Can someone please tell me what to do.

Have a good day,

On XP, the first thing you would do with this issue is to be sure you have
enough space for restore points to be created so you need to check to be
sure you have the space the system has alloted on all drives. If you do,
the next step would be to turn off System Restore on all drives, then,
reboot the system and turn it back on.

It's actually a little soon to be worrying about this, especially since you
are able to manually create restore points. It can sometimes take a little
time before manual restore points, system checkpoints, etc. start to kick
in.

PS,
I noticed in the registry @ HKLM \software\Microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\sywstemrestore
First run is 0x00000000
RPLifeinterval 0x00278d00
RPsessioninterval 0x00000001
Lastindex 0x0000004b
RPGlobalinterval 0x00015180
Default not set.

Also as I said I did make a manual RP about an hour ago.
Hope this additional information can help someone help me.

Thanks, I have 892 GB of HD space left so that shouldn't be a problem.

I just tuned it off and rebooted. I sent the automatic to 60 seconds and still didn't work.
see my other posts about the registry settings.

Restore points by default are set to be created automatically every 24 hours
of operation. If you feel you have to adjust this, the registry key is
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore The value
of RPGlobalInterval can be changed as you desire. Default is the 86,400
seconds for 24 hours. Change as you see fit.

The registry settings don't mean anything to me but they may to someone
else. That said, I'd still give it a few days to kick in on its own. One
thing you might try is to install something and see if it creates a restore
point on its own. If yes, that would pretty much indicate, it's acting
properly as events such as this are supposed to trigger SR to create a
restore point automatically.

Automatic restore points ala System Checkpoints are usually created after
computer has been on for minimum of 24 hours if no other action that would
generate a restore pint happens.

Hi Michael,
I already tried to install and it didn't help but thanks.

System Restore ignores the registry keys at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore. They're there for backwards compatibility
with some XP scripts.

Check your Task Scheduler. You should have an automatic task there for
System Restore. Are there any errors shown there? What about in the event
log?

As I said in my OP my computer has been on since Monday, but thanks anyway.

Hi Jill,
I don't see any errors but this is what I found in the tasks for today. Hope this helps. If not please tell me where to
look.

My log has similar events. Event ID 102 indicates that the task completed
successfully. I have a number of 114s myself for when my computer was not on
at midnight for the scheduled task to run. These 114s usually start around 10
minutes after I turn on the computer.

So...how do you know that no automatic restore points exist? Where are you
checking this?

Because before I created the manual SR I went to SR and it said there were no restore points even though SR was running
and my drives were checked.
I originally change the registry to create one every 12 hours instead of 24 hours per instructions from ED Bott and MS
Press "Vista Inside Out".

Check our blog at

to see the instructions for getting a list of your restore points. Are there
none listed when you type "vssadmin list shadows" from an elevated command
prompt (started by running as Administrator)?

Here's what it displayed:
I made a manual one then turned off SR then made another manual one. Don't know about the third one. Right now there is
only the one I made after turning it off.

I'm confused...you said you turned off System Restore, correct? Why did you
turn it off? With all the tweaking that's happening I'm concerned that we
won't get Vista back to the default state.

Hi John,
Yes, I know this but it still won't do any automatic RP's
I reset the RPGlogalinterval to 43200 12 hours.

I'm confused...you said you turned off System Restore, correct? Why did you
turn it off? With all the tweaking that's happening I'm concerned that we
won't get Vista back to the default state.

I did that because the first post from Michael said:
the next step would be to turn off System Restore on all drives, then,
reboot the system and turn it back on.

Did that before any of these other steps were done, It didn't help.

Turning off System Restore will delete all previous restore points--it
essentially wipes out the shadow copy storage area. What I would recommend
is turning SR back on, leaving the computer on overnight, and then checking
to see whether the scheduled task completes.

The registry changes you made should not have any affect.

I will do that but I noticed that in the SR folder in Scheduled Tasks all the settings and conditions options tabs are
grayed out.
I don't think waiting 24 hours will help but I will do it. BTW I set SR for 12 hours.
