Cd rom's are missing, code 41....have spent several days trying to fix this
issue!!! aargg!! Have come to the conclusion that reg edit is the place to go
or try. I am following directions from a microsoft fix about upper and lower
filters. My problem is when I get there ...highlighted the num....4D36E965
it shows me a list. What am I to do at this point?? I see upper and lower
filters twice ...looks like this...
upper filter
upper filter.bak

Same thing for lower filters. Sorry if I sound stupid!! But at this point
I"ve read so much stuff that i don't understand and alot I
do...Like..."Regedit at your own risk" so i just want to fix the
problem..hopefully as painlessly as possiable and not have my computer
crash...Can someone give me a quick walk thru?? Please Help!!

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

Thank you for the reply..I took a quick look at the "smart way to ask
Questions" it will be a Great read!!! Thank You!! Ok, now a couple of
questions...
1, I looked at the dougknox fix, or at least i tried..can you tell me a
little as to what it does?
2, in the registry..@ upper an lower filters...do i just highlight upper
filter and delete? if so..do i do the same for upper filter.bak? I hope I am
making sence. They look like this...
upper filter
upper filter.bak
lower filter
lower filter.bak
one more question...regarding backing up the registry..will a 64mb usb
travelers drive work? (i don't know the proper name of these things) : ) Or
can I use the hard drive? Bare with me!! Thank you so much for your help.

1) Doug's fix does nothing more than the registry editing for you.
2) Yes. And answer in the affitrmative when/if it asks. Then close regedit
and reboot.
3) 64MB *should* be sufficient... However - I would back it up to the hard
drive *first*, to see just how big it gets. Use ERUNT to get a good backup
of the registry if you want.
