You could try System Restore. Take your whole system back to a time before you changed the file extension.

It might work (or not).

@ Me__2001 > Your file would not open on my word. It is still corrupt. I changed it to zip on purpose as it was instructed by many websites to get to the document.xml file so that you could edit it.

I managed to find a program called Recovery for Word which did open the file, albeit a bit f#$ked up, but at least the text is there. Serves me right for using TOC, Indexing and referencing in Word.

I thought that was the case but it wasn't clear from your first post. I'm not sure why the file won't open for you as it works perfectly for me although i am using office 2010

I'm glad you've managed to recover the majority of the contents though
